A Message from Dr. Shirley Girouard
Dear Nurse, Future Nurse and Friends of Nursing,
On behalf of the School of Nursing in the College of Health and Human Services (HHS) at San Francisco State University, I welcome your interest in and support of our School. As our community, State and Nation struggle with a persistent and significant nursing shortage, our School makes significant contributions aimed at increasing the number and quality of nurses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In keeping with the vision, mission and goals of the University and College of HHS, we are particularly proud of the diversity of our faculty and students. Also, we continue a more than 50 year tradition of educating nurses who improve patient care at the bedside and in the community in an increasingly complex healthcare system. Our graduates also serve as healthcare managers and administrators and as faculty for many schools of nursing in the area. Many of our students pursue higher degrees in nursing and healthcare. Our students and faculty are engaged in service to the community as both course and volunteer work.
It is an exciting time for the School as we change with the times, continuously improve our educational programs and partner with others in the community to improve nursing education and, thus, patient care outcomes. The School:
- Is using our mid-fidelity simulation facility and other technology to enhance student learning across the theoretical and clinical components of our curriculum;
- Has newly renovated clinical space and is planning, as funding becomes available, to outfit a high-fidelity, state-of-the art simulation Technology Learning Classroom (affectionately known as the TLC);
- Is exploring curricular and financial opportunities to expand existing programs;
- Has faculty engaged in research and scholarship in a variety of areas;
- Plans to enhance our partnerships with employers to better meet their needs and those of the clients they serve through our educational programs and continuing education options
It is a wonderful time to be a nurse and to be involved in nursing education. Please join us as we look forward to having you share in out rich legacy and promising future. Your interest is welcome and appreciated.
